Project Description

Algebra

Teacher-generated materials $5.

Pre-requisite: adequate completion of the diagnostic test. (The test can be administered well ahead of the beginning of classes. I can give the parents feedback and areas of weakness can be corrected before we start up in September). Algebra is gateway course. It is essential for continuing in the study of the higher maths. In our course we will cover expressions, equations and inequalities. Students will deal with abstract concepts, concrete problems, graphs, and real world applications. Algebra students at Cornerstone are expected to devote 5 – 8 hours a week to diligent studying and doing homework. Typically parents and/or students will use the answer key in the back of the textbook to check selected problems, and students will correct their mistakes. Then they will do similar exercises to turn in to me. The syllabus is flexible; the textbook is our tool, not our master. We will adjust the course to meet the needs of the students, so parental input is crucial. There will be periodic take home chapter tests and frequent in-class quizzes so parents, students, and the tutor can monitor progress and know what areas need to be strengthened. Students will need the textbook, notebook paper, ruler, graph paper, compass (for drawing circles) and a calculator (they may use the one on their phones). I will indicate when calculator use is or is not permitted. I encourage the students to contact me via email if they have any questions. We want every student to succeed.

Thank You
