Secrets of Great Communicators

Tutor:  Deb Lembach

Prerequisite: None

Description:

Whether students want to ace job interviews, share their testimonies, or inform and influence the world around them, communicating verbally with confidence and skill is one of the most valuable skills they can cultivate.

In this first-semester class, students will view video teachings by renowned Christian communicator Jeff Myer, who brilliantly demonstrates the skills he imparts; read from the works of famous speakers such as Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, and Teddy Roosevelt; and complete manageable weekly workbook assignments to help them discover their own voices. Students will research, outline, write and present orally at least three original speeches. They will grow and refine their skills through verbal feedback from peers and written feedback from the tutor.

In just a few months, students will develop the competence and confidence in oral communication they’ll need to present their message to one person or the entire world, well into adulthood.

This class can be used toward English or elective credits for high school graduation.

Note: Creative Writing is the perfect second-semester follow-up course to this because students have learned to mine their brains and hearts for fresh ideas, and they have already earned one another’s trust.
