Biology

Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Biology 2nd Edition and accompanying test booklet (ISBN 978-1-932012-54-5)
This course is designed to be the student’s first high school science course and is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. We will solidify each new topic with Apologia labs and a wide variety of supplemental—and often edible—hands on activities. These activities include scientific method with M&Ms, jell-o cells, transcription/translation relay, gummy bear molecules and play-do mitosis.
We will be covering the modules on kingdoms Monera, Protista and Fungi in the form of oral presentations. This will give the students a change of pace and a chance to focus on and research a specific topic. The students will then present their topic to the class, and not only be able to share their work, but also glean from everyone else’s.
