Project Description

Composition and Research

Books: TBA (a writing handbook and a supplemental packet)
Prerequisites: Students must be in 10th grade or higher and have completed our Composition/Literature class so that they are familiar with multi-paragraph essay writing. However, if a student does not meet these requirements but is interested in the course, please contact the instructor.
Composition and Research will focus on the writing process. Students will complete several writing assignments throughout the course of the year, and their assignments will derive from class discussion, observation, fictional poetry and prose, and non-fiction prose. We will begin by establishing voice; then we will move onto Rhetorical Analysis and Argument Essays for the remainder of the first semester. The second semester will center on research: creating research questions, finding credible sources, maintaining a voice among the critics, arguing a position, and drafting a lengthy, well-researched essay.
Here is the booklist for Composition and Research:
1. The Little Brown Handbook 11th edition by H. Ramsey Fowler ISBN: 9780205651719

2. Who Says: The Writer’s Research by Deborah Holdstein ISBN: 9780199947355

3. Composition Writing Resource Packet by Rebecca Reed. I will let parents know the cost in

August; it will simply consist of the copying fee.
As an aside, abebooks.com has many of the course books cheaper than amazon.com.

Thank You,

Rebecca Reed
