Project Description

Health

Purpose: The purpose of this class is to present the Bible as the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. This class will encourage students to make healthy choices by studying information about physical, mental, social, and spiritual health.  Students will be presented with evidence that the choices they make (past, present, and future) will have an impact on these 4 areas of health.

Grading: This course will be divided into 4 Units that are not equal in length.  The grade for each unit will be based on class participation preparedness and discussion (30%), unit assessment (20%), and homework (50%).

Sensitive Topics:  The textbook for this class contains some anatomically correct sketches. There are a few sections of the book that contain information that needs to be taught delicately.  The tutor believes these topics are best taught by a parent in a home setting. These sections will not be required reading, nor will the homework questions about them. Parents will receive an e-mail at the appropriate time to read these sections with students.  The tutor encourages parents to read these sections with their students, discuss them, and keep an open dialog.  These sections include: pages 54-56 “The Reproductive System” pages 140-146 “Sexually Transmitted Diseases” pages 192-197 “Choosing Life,” 274-275 “The Unexpected,” and pages 359-367 “When Friendships Become Relationships.”

Guest Speakers: This course will consist of several guest speakers. Each speaker is an expert in the area being discussed in class and will present information that will encourage the teens in making healthy life choices.
